Geeks, nerds and the other associated members of our industry live and die by the toys they play with. With some cool software, these toys aren't much fun. Here are a few that are worthwhile.

  • Burnin 2.0 This is the same Burnin mentioned in the book. Not free, but well worth the price.
  • Tuff-Test Lite An absolutely marvelous piece of diagnostics software, considering the price. It's FREE!!
  • MY CPU Ever need to know what kind of CPU was running on a machine? This one will tell you for free.
  • Passmark Performance Test Now that you've got your system built, this shareware program tells you how fast it runs.
  • Disk Test Pro This program gets data off of defective diskettes, and in some cases even repairs the diskette.
  • GDisk Sometimes FDISK just isn't enough. This utilitity can kill just about any partition you can create.
  • Runtime System Info Displays general information about your processor, BIOS, memory and more.
  • Memory+ This utility can make sure your memory is used to its fullest potential. Well, your computer's memory, anyway.
  • Snapit Not really a diagnostics utility, but kind of nice. It is a very easy to use screen capture utility.
  • Sound Card Detector Locates and provides setup information for installed sound devices.
  • Partition Manager Create new partitions and change old ones on the fly, without losing your data.
  • MBR Tool Back up your Master Boot Record now. When your hard drive fails, you might be able to recover it.
  • ATA Management Tool Did you know that manufacturers sacrifice the speed of your hard drive in order to make them quieter? If your hard drive supports the feature, this tool monitors the ATA Management function and lets you adjust the settings.
  • Beacon 5 A Windows tweaking tool that helps you make performance enhancements an change visual features.
  • Binary Works CPU Controller A utility that lets WIN95, WIN98 and NT40 boxes manage the CPU the way 2000 does.

  • ZBoot This utility can allow the installation of up to 8 different OSs on a single machine. Careful though, Mess up and none of your OSs will boot properly!
  • Restoration Ever clean out your recycle bin and THEN realize there was something you needed restored? As long as you haven't copied new data over the clusters, this utility will fix that problem for you.
  • Chsdir Lists the content of a FAT partition. Can be used for evaluating the integrity of lost partitions.
  • GB32 Having problems installing disks larger than 32GB? Check out this little utility. It tells you where the problem lies.
  • SuperShredder  Deletes data on a drive so completely even the best hackers would find it difficult to retrieve. USE THIS UTILITY WITH EXTREME CAUTION!
